Genetic diversity of Fonio (Digitaria exilis) in Burkina Faso using SNP markers
- Int. J. Biol. Chem. Sci. , 19 (6) : 2388-2397
Résumé
Fonio (Digitaria exilis) is a cereal of food, economic and cultural importance in Burkina Faso. Although many studies have focused on its agromorphological variability, a more thorough evaluation based on the genome sequencing offer is essential for better management and valorization of this cereal. This present study aimed at determining the level and structuring of genetic diversity in 57 Fonio accessions collected in Burkina Faso using single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers. SNP were generated following high throughput DNA sequencing. The number of SNP detected per accession ranged from 36,997 to 86,207 with a heterozygosity rate ranging from 0.234 to 0.668. The genetic diversity parameters revealed the existence of moderate genetic diversity (He = 0.48). The structuring of diversity showed two genetic groups independently of the collection area. The results also revealed an SNP linkage map that can be used to identify quantitative trait locus (QTL) for a species marker-assisted selection program. These results will serve in the search for a better conservation strategy and the sustainable use of this local resource.
