Résumé

Agroforestry parklands occupy a key place in farming system of Burkina Faso. However, there is a limited management of the litter from trees of parklands for soil fertility
improvement. Therefore, the present study was carried out with the aim to quantify the litter produced yearly and understand the decomposition rate as well as the release of the nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium from litters of the two most dominant species of agroforestry parkland systems in Burkina Faso (Faidherbia albida (Del) and Vitellaria paradoxa C. F. Gaertn). Litterbag technique was used. Mesh size, position, fertilisation and mixture of the two species at different ratios were the factors studied and six dates (2WAI, 4WAI, 6WAI, 8WAI, 16WAI and 36WAI). The use of 24 litter traps installed under each tree led to an estimate of 7,79 kg tree-1 of litter produced by faidherbia and 24,50 kg tree-1 for karité. Litter of faidherbia displayed higher nutrient contents (N, P and K) compared to that of karité. The results of the decomposition revealed that the mesh size 2 mm and the buried position accelerated the decomposition in comparison with mesh size 1 mm and the upper soil surface position, respectively. Adding NH4Cl and TSP showed a significant effect on the decomposition with mineralization constants of 0,191 and 0,170, respectively. In turn, the addition of Burkina Phosphate (BP) did not affect the decomposition rate. The decomposition of the litter of faidherbia appeared to be more rapid (k= 0,215g week-1) than that of karité (k=0,130 g week-1). The study also showed that the mixture of the types of litter at different ratios enhanced the decomposition in comparison with litter of karité solely. It was noticed after 5 months of incubation (16WAI) a net release of P and K whereas N was lower release regardless the factor considered. The analysis of the results of the data of the remaining sampling dates may help understanding the reasons of the immobilization of the nitrogen. Furthermore, it might be useful to repeat this experiment taking into account other factors that may affect the decomposition.
