Hepatoprotective and hepatoreparative activity of aqueous extract of Celosia trigyna Linn leaves against paracetamol-induced liver toxicity in Wistar rats,

Celosia trigyna L. is a plant used in traditional medicine for the treatment of inflammatory diseases,
ulcers, and liver dysfunctions. The aim of present study is to investigate about hepatoprotective and
hepatoreparative activities of the aqueous extract of Celosia trigyna (AECT).
Sixty male and female Wistar rats were divided into six groups of 5 rats per sex. A neutral control group
was treated with 0.9% NaCl. The other groups consisting of negative control, positive control, AECT at
doses of 50, 100, and 250 mg/kg bw were previously poisoned with a toxic dose of paracetamol 1000
mg/kg bw then received respectively 0.9% NaCl, Légalon® 70 mg, and the extract at different doses.
These oral treatments lasted three weeks. The hepato-protective and hepato-reparative effects were
evaluated by determining the serum concentrations of alanine amino-transferase (ALAT), aspartate
amino-transferase (ASAT), direct bilirubin (DB), total bilirubin (TB), and alkaline phosphatase (ALP).
The hepatoprotective effect of the extract was comparable to that of Légalon®. A better hepatoprotective
activity of the extract was observed with transaminase at all doses in males, with the exception of BD,
which showed a better activity only at doses of 50 and 100 mg/kg bw, and BT at 250 mg/kg bw
(p<0.001). Similarly, in females, a better hepatoprotective activity of AECT was observed at all doses for
ALP and TB, with the exception of DB, which showed a better activity than at doses of 100 and 250
mg/kg bw, and transaminase at 50 mg/kg bw.
